That said, as an American raised in Toronto, where I grew up with the sense that we (collectively) were inheritors of the good government bequeathed us by the United Empire Loyalists, whom American call Tories, I am curious to see how the documentary deals with them.
I enjoyed the episode, but I was surprised it gave almost no attention to the Bernard Bailyn notion that the colonists were listening to extreme if not paranoid British political philosophers when they started advancing their anti-imperial arguments.
Regarding “send in the army” - this was certainly true at home but I suspect it still came as a shock to colonials who hadn’t seen the army in this role before.
For some, yes. For others, who had seen the British army clear the Highlands of Scotland after the Jacobite Rebellion in 1745, it was all too familiar!
