Biography
___ Evan Wilson - Minstrel Extraordinaire

The matter and energy that constitute Evan Wilson were formed approximately 14 or 15 billion years ago in a giant, cosmic explosion known as the "Big Bang". Not much interesting happened to them after that until the middle of the year 1968, when the above mentioned matter and energy wound up in DuPage County, Illinois and were surprised (and not less than a bit put out) to find themselves arranged into the form currently identified as Evan Wilson.

In 1977, exiled to the northwest reaches of St. Louis County, Missouri, Evan began his musical career by playing cello in the grade school orchestra for a couple of years. After getting bored with that, he tinkered around quite unsuccessfully with the family piano for a couple of years, and then it was back to playing the cello again for the local junior high school orchestra in 1981. One day while plucking the strings of his cello slung across his knee in a manner guaranteed to incite the derision of any orchestral conductor, Evan decided that six strings must undoubtedly be half again better than four. So, he quit the school orchestra and by early 1983, he got his hands on his first guitar. He never looked back.

1986 saw the formation of Evan's first garage band, Pyrexx Gem, for which he played guitar and sang lead vocals. During the recording of two wildly unsuccessful demo tapes, The Band, Man and Exposition (1987 and 1988, respectively), Evan decided that maybe something was missing. That led to some serious conservatory-style study of music theory, composition, and literature at the University of Missouri, Columbia, as well as internships at KMNR (the University of Missouri, Rolla college radio station), Contemporary Productions in St. Louis, and Universal Recording Studios in Chicago (Bill Putnam's old haunt) plus production of a series of experimental (and also highly unsuccessful) recordings. Evan apparently found at least a few of the things that were missing. He is, however, still pissed at his second-year theory professor for being a putz who couldn't figure out how to teach water to run downhill.

While at UMC, Evan ran into a long-lost friend, John Trower, who was playing guitar for a St. Louis band called The Beers. Evan joined in to play lead and rhythm guitar for a few jam sessions. After graduation, he immediately moved back to Chicago and set up a project recording studio. During the early '90's, Evan made several more experimental recordings including In Sync (1991), In Search of a Band (1992), and Section Eight (1994) in his studio for which he wrote all of the music and lyrics (except the cover tunes, of course), sang, and played all instruments. He also recorded a Beers demo tape, A Taste of the Beers (1992-1993) at Chicago Trax Studios and in his project studio. During the recording, Evan served The Beers as lead vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist, percussionist, recording engineer, producer, and graphic artist. Selections from this demo appear on The Beers Hotel album which has received airplay on St. Louis radio stations including The Point, KDHX, and KYMC.

During the late '90's, Evan holed up in his project studio and began concentrating on becoming the consummate 21st century one-man band. A long series of recordings for which he wrote all the music and lyrics (except the cover tunes, of course), sang all the vocal parts, played all the instruments (including guitars, bass, synthesizers, drums, and percussion), produced, and engineered began pouring out of his studio. These recordings have been released on a quartet of CD's titled This CD Goes Up to 11 (1999), All D All D Time (2001), Prototype Album (2002), and Plain White Wrapper (2003). Each of these albums has been wildly unsuccessful and has met with absolutely no critical acclaim.

Other projects that Evan has worked on include tracks for a demo CD by Fred Roggow and mixdowns for a trio of CD's for Keith Dukavicius of Chicago-based SWOON, Lucky You (May 2002), Pussy Willow (August 2002), and Superstar (October 2002).

In late 2004, Evan moved to new digs and opened up the Screaming Larch Recording Studio. He is currently working on the tracks for his upcoming album while eagerly awaiting the arrival of his new mixing board and preparing to do some serious acoustical treatments to the studio.

Evan's music is primarily Rock 'n' Roll and American folk with a little blues mixed in. His influences include Rush, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Nektar, Frank Zappa, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Bela Bartók, Igor Stravinsky, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
